The Nassau County District Court has authority over four categories of cases, including civil and criminal matters. The court generally handles civil matters seeking monetary damages up to $15,000, small claims matters with monetary damages up to $5,000, commercial small claims matters with monetary damages up to $5,000, landlord and tenant matters concerning housing proceedings and evictions.
The Nassau District Court has authority to hear criminal matters involving trial jurisdiction over misdemeanors, violations and infractions, preliminary jurisdiction over felonies and traffic tickets charging a crime. The office of the Nassau County District Attorney hears and prosecutes criminal cases in Nassau County New York. These include Nassau County criminal charges in violation of the New York State Penal law, as well as violations of the New York State vehicle and traffic law, which include driving while intoxicated (1192.2) and other serious traffic violations.
